HARARE, The Zimbabwe Council for Tourism (ZCT) says the commencing of direct flights into Victoria Falls by Kenyan Airways from next month will boost tourist arrivals in the resort town.

ZCT President Tich Hwingwiri said in a media statement here Thursday that the tourism sector in Zimbabwe was delighted by the development.

"Existing and longstanding services by South African Airways, British Airways operated by Comair, Air Zimbabwe, Fastjet Zimbabwe and Air Namibia continue to be offered and we are grateful to these airlines for the confidence they have shown in the destination over a long period of time," he said.

Kenyan Airways will begin flying into Victoria Falls next month and Hwingwiri expressed optimism that more international airlines would fly into Victoria Falls, one of the world's top tourist destinations.

It is our hope that Victoria Falls will become one of the most important air service destinations in Africa, acting as a stimulus for further development of facilities for leisure and conference travelers," he said.

Victoria Falls airport is poised to attract increased air traffic after it underwent a 150 million US dollars face-lift which increased passenger handling capacity to 1.5 million per year, up from 500,000 previously.

Some of the new features of the airport include an international terminal building, a 4,000-metre runway and control tower, road networks and a new fire station.

Zimbabwe has in recent years seen increased interest from various airlines eager to fly into the country.
