The Tarkwa circuit court, has sentenced a taxi driver to 10 years imprisonment in hard labour for conspiring with his wife to rob a driver of his Mazda Damio taxi cab valued at GH?30,000.00.

The convict, Timothy Amponsah, 32, who is not a first-time offender pleaded guilty to conspiracy and robbery.

The Prosecutor, Police Chief Inspector Joseph Lartey, told the court presided over by Mrs Hathie Ama Manu that the complainant, Sampson Arhin, 28, a taxi driver, lives at Ankobra in the Prestea Huni-Valley Municipality.

He said Amponsah and the wife Sheilla Omano, who is currently on the run, were residents of Asebu Ankromah in the Central Region with four children.

On March 5, 2023, around 1800 hours, Chief Inspector Lartey said the couple agreed to travel to Prestea to rob a taxi from any driver they chanced upon.

Prosecution said, the same day at about 2130 hours Amponsah and the wife arrived at Prestea to carry out the operation, spotted the complainant in his taxi cab with registration number AS 9230-22 and signaled him to stop.

The two then hired the service of the complainant from Prestea to Dumasi to visit a friend, but on arrival around 2230 hours, Omano made a phone call and later told Arhin that the person they came to visit had left to Bogoso so they should proceed to the said place.

He said in the course of the journey, Omano sat on the front passenger's seat, while the convict who sat directly behind the driver attacked him around a rubber plantation and smeared powered pepper on his face.

He said the complainant lost control of the vehicle and the engine went off and Amponsah pushed him out of the vehicle and then drove to an unknown destination.

On March 6, 2023, the complainant reported the incident to the police in Bogoso and was given medical form to attend hospital, where he was treated and discharged.

Chief Inspector Lartey said on March 11, this year, police upon further investigations, arrested Arhin at Asebu Akromah and when a search was conducted in his room, complainant's original number plate was found.

The court after passing judgment ordered that the vehicle should be released to the complainant.

Amazigh New Year Becomes Official National Holiday in Morocco

Morocco's King Mohammed VI has approved the celebration of the Amazigh New Year as an official national holiday.

King Mohammed VI has instructed to add the Amazigh New Year to the list of national holidays in Morocco.

In a statement from the Royal Court, Morocco's King Mohammed VI has approved the celebration of the Amazigh New Year as an official national holiday.

Instructions were sent to the Head of the Government Aziz Akhannouch, to take the necessary steps to implement the decision.

This move reflects the king's 'commitment to the Berber language, a fundamental part of Morocco's authentic identity and a shared asset for all Moroccans,' the statement explains.

The constitutional recognition of the Amazigh language as an official language of the country, alongside Arabic, further underscores the significance of this decision. It's a historic step that's expected to deepen national unity and further promote the country's diverse cultural heritage.

Activists in Morocco have long been campaigning for the Amazigh New Year to be recognized as an official national holiday. The Amazigh New Year, also known as 'Yennayer,' marks the beginning of the agricultural calendar and is celebrated by the country's Amazigh people, who make up around 40% of the population.

While the Moroccan government recognized the holiday, it was not an official national holiday with paid time off work. Activists argued that granting the holiday official status would be a significant

step towards recognizing and celebrating the country's diverse cultural heritage.

The campaign had gained momentum in recent years, with many Moroccans expressing support for the idea on social media.

White House to meet Microsoft, Google CEOs on AI dangers

The White House will host CEOs of top artificial intelligence companies, including Alphabet Inc's Google and Microsoft, on Thursday to discuss risks and safeguards as the technology catches the attention of governments and lawmakers globally.

Generative artificial intelligence has become a buzzword this year, with apps such as ChatGPT capturing the public's fancy, sparking a rush among companies to launch similar products they believe will change the nature of work.

Millions of users have begun testing such tools, which supporters say can make medical diagnoses, write screenplays, create legal briefs and debug software, leading to growing concern about how the technology could lead to privacy violations, skew employment decisions, and power scams and misinformation campaigns.

'We aim to have a frank discussion about the risks we see in current and near-term AI development,' said a senior administration official, speaking on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter. 'Our North Star here is this idea that if we're going to seize these benefits, we have to start by managing the risks.'

Thursday's meeting, will include Google's Sundar Pichai, Microsoft's Satya Nadella, OpenAI's Sam Altman and Anthropic's Dario Amodei along with Vice President Kamala Harris and administration officials including Biden's Chief of Staff Jeff Zients, National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan, Director of the National Economic Council Lael Brainard and Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo.

Ahead of the meeting, the administration announced a $140 million investment from the National Science Foundation to launch seven new AI research institutes and said the White House's Office of Management and Budget would release policy guidance on the use of AI by the federal government.

Botha acquires ICECP diploma

Athletics coach Henk Botha says his recently acquired International Coaching Enrichment Certificate Programme (ICECP) diploma will help him grow as an individual, as well as help many Namibian athletes.

The ICECP honoured members of its XII (12) and XIII (13) classes at a ceremony held on 24 April 2023 at the International Olympic Committee (IOC) headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland.

The course provided national-level coaches with enhanced coaching and leadership skills, along with the latest coaching principles from the University of Delaware, the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee, and Olympic Solidarity (a department of the IOC).

The intended outcome of the course is to assist national-level coaches in developing proficiency in the areas of sport sciences, talent identification, coaching education, management, athlete development, safe sport principles and grassroots sports development.

In an interview with Nampa on Wednesday, Botha said he was happy to acquire the qualification as it is life-changing for him and the athletes he will be working with in Namibia.

β€œIt was tremendous, we did a lot of modern coaching techniques which enriched me as a coach. I am better off as a coach and I can provide for my athletes, as well as other athletes in Namibia,” he said.

He added that attending the course connected him to several coaches around the world who he believes will work well with him, as well as help the different sports codes in future.

β€œI have set up links with other sports codes who can come help us in Namibia. I have also been approached by the Bangladesh Athletics Federation to assist them with their sprint athletes. Through this programme I have been in contact with European Athletics who want to add us to a coaching forum as a country where we can share information which in the end will help us become better,” said Botha.

The ICECP saw 31 coaches from 27 nations receive diplomas in 17 different sports codes. Since its inception in 2008, a total of 457 participants from 125 nations and 39 sports have graduated from the programme.
