Accra: At the crossroads of national development, there’s an urgent need to discard and, if possible, completely ban the importation of human hair from some Asian and South American countries, Mr. Prince Bugnaba Mba, President of Forum for Equity, has said.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Mba emphasized that human hair from these regions is more expensive than gold. He criticized the importation of these beauty accessories, citing the negative impact on foreign exchange business controls and management, and highlighting how it undermines traditional values.
Mr. Mba challenged research centers to explore alternative models using plants like silky fiber of corn and other crops. He also mentioned the potential for developing a non-inflammable petrochemical type to meet the growing demand for hair products.
Furthermore, Mr. Mba called for public officials to be banned from wearing human hair while on duty. He advocated for enhancing natural beauty with the use of shea butter, coconut oil, and palm kernel oil. He urged Africans to embrace “Miss Natural Beauty,” free from artificial enhancements.
Mr. Mba invoked the spirit of Kobina Sekye, who famously refused to wear legal robes, to encourage a move beyond colonial fashion trends. He argued that adopting this philosophy could lead to significant economic savings and reinforce Africa’s identity as creative and positive-minded people.
