Bolgatanga: The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) of Ghana has urged students of the Midwifery Training College (MTC) in Bolgatanga to commit to their studies and practical sessions without resorting to shortcuts. The Council warned that inadequately trained midwives could pose significant threats to the healthcare system, potentially increasing maternal and neonatal mortality rates.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mrs. Philomina Adjoa Nyarkoa Woolley, the Registrar of the NMC, delivered this message during a meeting with the staff and students of the college. Her visit was part of a broader tour of health training institutions across Ghana. Accompanied by Dr. Mary Ama Opare, the Board Chair of the Council, and other officials, Mrs. Woolley emphasized the importance of practical experience in midwifery, urging students to regularly visit the labor ward to gain hands-on experience.
Mrs. Woolley warned that taking shortcuts in their education would leave students unprepared to handle critical situations, such as managing a bleeding patient. She encouraged students to focus on their studies to help reduce maternal and neonatal deaths. Additionally, she advised students to choose friends wisely, as bad company could lead them astray.
The Registrar noted the conducive learning environment of the College and insisted that dedication to studies would ensure students’ success. She assured them that diligent study would lead to successful examinations and graduation as skilled and qualified midwives, ultimately improving service delivery quality.
Dr. Opare highlighted the crucial role midwives play in healthcare and stressed the need for professionalism and adherence to ethics, particularly in the labor ward. She encouraged students to take advantage of the nearby Regional Hospital to enhance their practical experience with various labor scenarios.
Dr. Opare also pointed out the numerous opportunities available in the midwifery field and urged students to aim high in their careers. She concluded by wishing them success in their future endeavors.
Madam Margaret Azusiyinne, the Vice Principal of the college, expressed gratitude to the NMC Board and management for their visit and valuable advice to the students.
