Accra: The Criminal Investigations Department of the Ghana Police Service has successfully retrieved 10 stolen vehicles. The retrieval operation was announced by Commission of Police (COP) Lydia Yaako Donkor, Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), during a media briefing held in Accra.
According to Ghana News Agency, the vehicles comprised eight Toyota RAV4s and two Toyota CH-Rs, which were reported stolen from the Netherlands and later tracked to Ghana. The vehicles were successively retrieved between September 15 and 17, 2025, from various parts of Accra, including Kantamanto, Nima, and Cantonments.
COP Donkor emphasized the CID’s intensified efforts to tackle the growing issue of transnational vehicle crime. She highlighted that vehicle theft not only causes financial loss to victims but also tarnishes Ghana’s international reputation and fuels other organized criminal activities. She credited the successful retrieval to the collaboration with the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority, international partners, and embassies of the affected countries.
According to COP Donkor, the police recently collaborated with the Netherlands Embassy and Digitpol, a security company that works closely with the Netherlands Police, to track and recover stolen vehicles trafficked to Ghana. She advised the public to exercise vigilance when purchasing vehicles and strongly recommended that prospective buyers demand proof of ownership from the country of origin. Additionally, vehicles can be verified with INTERPOL Accra before finalizing any purchase.
