Accra: The Central Regional Office of the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has taken decisive action by disposing of 29,435 unwholesome products in the region. This initiative is part of the regulatory body’s ongoing efforts to remove such products from the market.
According to Ghana News Agency, the seized items included expired and unwholesome drugs, food, cosmetics, and household chemicals gathered during the second and third quarters of this year. The disposal exercise was conducted at the Nkanfoa dumping site in Cape Coast, where the products were either crushed, buried by an excavator, or burnt.
Ms. Francisca Abena Asubonteng Anokye, Central Regional Head of the FDA, emphasized the agency’s commitment to regulating products available on the Ghanaian market. She warned producers and sellers against distributing unwholesome products, stating that violators would face legal consequences.
The Public Health Act, 2012, Section 132, subsections two and three, mandates the FDA to oversee the safe disposal of regulated products to avoid health risks to the public. Ms. Anokye advised consumers to scrutinize expiry dates, ‘best before’ dates, and the physical condition of product packaging before making purchases. She also cautioned against buying bloated or dented canned foods, as they are deemed unwholesome for consumption.
