Accra: Mr George Opare Addo, Minister for Youth, Development and Empowerment, has commended the Ghana Home Economics Association (GHEA) for its ongoing efforts in training the younger generation. The association provides skills and conceptual tools that drive innovation across various sectors, including sustainable food systems, textiles designing, nutrition services, and entrepreneurial ventures.

According to Ghana News Agency, Mr Opare Addo praised the association for its mission over the past six decades, ensuring that the discipline of Home Economics remains relevant. He made these remarks at a conference celebrating the association’s significant milestone of 60 years in Ghana. The event, themed ’60 years of Home Economics in Ghana; The Past, The Present, and The Future,’ served as a platform for reflection, recognition of pioneers, and setting a progressive future path.

The celebration featured speakers from diverse backgrounds, including Mrs Edith Francois, Togbe Foe Tsali II, and Dr Mrs Esther Amoah. They addressed contemporary issues within Home Economics, providing insights to inform policy and practice while charting a better course for the association.

The GHEA aims to promote the status of Home Science in Ghana and offer opportunities through conferences, symposia, and seminars to improve living standards. It also strives to maintain high professional standards, encourage research, and foster relationships with national and international organizations focused on home and family improvement.

Mr Opare Addo highlighted the vast applications of Home Economics, from nutritional science to agriculture and agro-business. He emphasized the need to view the field as a modern entrepreneurial discipline rather than an exclusively feminist endeavor. He expressed confidence in Home Economics’ potential to drive economic initiatives and pledged government support for greater investment to benefit young people and contribute to national development.

Madam Comfort Medah Kutum, the current president of the association, expressed gratitude for the past six decades of dedication and service. She acknowledged the role of Home Economics in equipping generations with essential life skills and promoting sustainable practices and socio-economic development in Ghana.
