Accra: The Minority in Parliament Thursday condemned the raid on the private residence of the former Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Ernest Addison, by the National Security operatives. Mr. Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader in Parliament, called on the Government to quickly bring a stop to those acts, saying: 'These acts of intimidation and terror are relics of the past.'
According to Ghana News Agency, the raid, led by Mr. Richard Jakpa, the Director of Operations at National Security, involved about 20 armed men who allegedly raided Dr. Addison's residence on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, at Roman Ridge in Accra. The operatives, some wearing balaclavas and wielding AK-47 semi-automatic rifles, conducted a search while Dr. Addison was at home.
Mr. Afenyo-Markin emphasized that Ghana is a mature democracy and insisted that actions must be conducted properly. He highlighted that three official vehicles belonging to Dr. Addison were taken but later informed by Mr. Jakpa that they were parked elsewhere and could be retrieved. He expressed concern that such actions undermine democracy and investor confidence, potentially leading to capital flight and a lack of safety among citizens.
The Minority Leader warned that the financial sector could suffer as investors might withdraw, impacting governance and economic growth. He alleged that the raid was traumatizing and that although nothing substantial was found, GH?10,000 was reportedly missing from Dr. Addison's residence. Additionally, jewelry belonging to Dr. Addison's wife was also said to be missing, with Mr. Afenyo-Markin accusing the operatives of theft.
The operatives reportedly ransacked the house, disabled the CCTV system, and demanded to know the location of any vaults or cash. Dr. Addison informed them that he had no such vaults or large sums at home. Mr. Jakpa claimed he had a warrant to conduct the search, which has sparked controversy and criticism from the Minority in Parliament.
