Accra: Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the National Chairman of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), emphasized that the values of the late former President Jerry John Rawlings, founder of the party, should guide Ghanaians. He highlighted the significance of celebrating Rawlings' birthday as an opportunity to learn from his principles, including probity and accountability, punctuality, positive defiance, and a commitment to democracy and lifestyle audits.

According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Nketia made these remarks during a well-attended ceremony in Accra organized by the NDC to commemorate the 78th birthday of the party's founder. He suggested that such events are crucial for redefining national values and urged Ghanaians to establish a clear set of values to guide their conduct and aspirations.

Mr. Nketia underscored the importance of defining national values to enable citizens to evaluate their leaders and themselves. He noted that Rawlings championed probity and accountability, stressing that these principles extend beyond financial matters to encompass positions of authority and the need for transparency in leadership.

The NDC Chairman also addressed the principle of positive defiance, which Rawlings espoused, encouraging individuals to voice opposition to mistakes made by superiors. He emphasized the importance of teaching the youth about standing up for what is right, even in the face of authority.

Highlighting Rawlings' democratic approach, Mr. Nketia recalled how the former president would consult diverse stakeholders, including market traders, before making decisions. He also praised Rawlings for his punctuality and belief in lifestyle audits, which he saw as integral to ethical leadership.

Mr. Kimathi Agyeman-Rawlings, son of the late president, attended the event with his sister, Madam Amina Agyeman-Rawlings. He reflected on their father's commitment to inclusive decision-making and the establishment of local government structures enshrined in the 1992 constitution. He expressed gratitude to the NDC for honoring Rawlings' legacy and vision for a better Ghana.

Mr. Fiifi Fiavi Kwetey, NDC General Secretary, spoke of Rawlings' profound love for people and country. He recounted how Rawlings' emergence as a leader was foretold in 1972, highlighting his dedication to resetting the nation's course. Kwetey called on the NDC to embrace this legacy as they approach future elections.

The event also featured speeches from other prominent figures, including Nana Ato Dadzie, former Chief of Staff, and Naval Captain Asaasie Gyimah, with high-profile dignitaries such as Alhaji Mahama Iddrisu and Dr. Christine Amoako Nuamah in attendance.
