Accra: The Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union of the Trade Union Congress, Ghana, has announced the suspension of its indefinite strike action, initially enacted to advocate for improved conditions of service. This decision was made on Wednesday, with the union advising its members to return to their respective duties by Thursday, October 2, 2025.
According to Ghana News Agency, the suspension follows a meeting involving the Union, the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC), and various employer institutions that took place on Monday, September 29, 2025. King James Azortibah, the General Secretary of the Union, highlighted that the dialogue was constructive, paving the way for an amicable resolution to the concerns raised by the union members.
Azortibah emphasized that the suspension is not a termination of the strike but a pause to facilitate further negotiations. He noted, “We are expected to meet FWSC on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, to proceed with negotiations, conclude and sign the various conditions of service of the affected institutions and TEWU of TUC membership.”
The union has made it clear that no member should face retaliation for participating in the strike, with leadership promising to defend any member subjected to victimization or unfair labor practices. Azortibah expressed gratitude to managements and school heads for their cooperation and support throughout the process, recognizing their commitment to delivering quality education services in Ghana.
Azortibah concluded by reaffirming the union’s commitment to being law-abiding while steadfastly pursuing better conditions for its members. Members who had traveled outside their jurisdictions are expected to report back to work no later than Monday, October 6, 2025.
