Accra: In a remarkable display of community spirit, thousands of residents in Biakoye District of the Oti Region came together to clean up their environment on National Sanitation Day. Armed with brooms, brushes, and a shared vision for a cleaner and healthier community, the residents swept through the streets of Abotoase, markets, public spaces, and the Volta Lakeside, leaving a trail of cleanliness and pride in their wake.
According to Ghana News Agency, the event was a success, with participants from all walks of life, including students, teachers, politicians, market women, and community leaders, joining forces to make a tangible difference. Mr. Eric Kwaku Opong, the District Chief Executive (DCE), stated that the clean-up exercise not only improved the physical environment but also brought the community together, fostering a sense of unity and shared responsibility.
The DCE highlighted that the government has issued a warning to Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) across the country. The emphasis is on the performance of these bodies on national sanitation day, with the implication that those failing to meet standards will face consequences. Addressing the participants, the DCE reiterated the government’s commitment to monitoring the performance of MMDAs, ensuring accountability for those that fall behind.
