Cape coast: The University of Cape Coast (UCC) has commissioned four ultramodern projects aimed at expanding access, promoting academic work and research, and strengthening its international outlook. These projects are set to significantly enhance the university’s capacity to address various academic and research needs.

According to Ghana News Agency, the newly commissioned facilities include the Office of Institutional Affiliations (OIA) and the School of Educational Development and Outreach (SEDO) building, an EdHotel ancillary facility, a five-storey Academic Staff Office complex, and a Science Annex building. These projects are designed to provide state-of-the-art facilities that will benefit both faculty and students.

The OIA/SEDO complex, a four-storey structure located at Apewosika, is equipped with a 250-seater auditorium, ICT rooms, seminar rooms, a reprography centre, and additional facilities. These features are intended to promote teacher education, curriculum innovation, and policy engagement, thereby enhancing UCC’s educational offerings.

The EdHotel extension includes modern kitchens, a restaurant, bar, gym, offices, a swimming pool, and auxiliary spaces. These amenities position the facility for 3-Star certification and are expected to facilitate international academic exchanges, further boosting UCC’s global presence.

The Academic Staff Office complex offers 120 offices, two conference rooms, and ancillary facilities. This complex is designed to improve faculty welfare, collaboration, and research capacity, addressing the needs of UCC’s academic staff.

The Science Annex, another major component of the project, accommodates nine laboratories, 40 offices, 15 research rooms, and large conference and computer rooms. The project was sponsored by GETFund, began in 2005, and faced delays in 2016. It was ultimately completed in 2021 with funds generated internally by UCC.

Vice Chancellor Professor Johnson Nyarko Boampong emphasized that these projects reflect UCC’s commitment to innovation, collaboration, and global competitiveness. He urged staff to maximize the potential of these facilities to tackle pressing issues such as climate change, public health, and food security.

During Prof. Boampong’s tenure, other significant projects have also been completed, including the Adow Obeng Central Administration Block, the School of Graduate Studies building, and the EdHotel Main facility.
