Accra: The Vision for Accelerated Sustainable Development, Ghana (VAST-Ghana), has joined the globe to mark the 2025 World Alcohol-Free Day, with a call on African leaders to enforce existing alcohol policies to protect their youth.

According to Ghana News Agency, the day is themed ‘Enjoy More,’ urging nations to unite to reclaim the energy of school, sports, innovation, and family, aiming to raise children of hope, not heartache. A statement issued by Mr. Labram Musah, Executive Director, and Mr. Godfred Tweneboah-Kodua, Youth Advocate of VAST-Ghana, emphasized the demand for change to safeguard families and futures.

The statement urged the Ministry of Health to complete the alcohol regulation development process and its passage, building on the May 2025 WHO-SAFER workshop in Ghana that advocated for stricter marketing bans, age limits, and taxation to limit youth access. Mr. Tweneboah-Koduah highlighted the joy associated with alcohol-free environments, events, and lives, demonstrating that citizens could enjoy more without alcohol.

He remarked that evidence shows alcohol harms individuals and communities, noting that young men are often pushed towards alcohol as a sign of strength, only to face addiction and broken futures. He added that alcohol-free lives offer more freedom, dignity, and opportunities, with young people performing better academically and developing healthier coping skills.

Mr. Musah stated that the 2025 World Alcohol-Free Day offers youth the chance to rewrite their narrative, showcasing a generation that chooses life over harm. He emphasized that joy does not need to vanish but can thrive when safety is prioritized, memories are clear, and health is protected. He concluded by inviting others to join in building a world of hope, love, and future through alcohol-free lifestyles.
