Accra: The Trades Union Congress (TUC) has marked the World Day for Decent Work by urging the government and employers to prioritize the dignity and well-being of workers. This initiative, according to the TUC, is aimed at fostering a Ghanaian society where work elevates the collective conscience for national development.

According to Ghana News Agency, the TUC emphasized that the observance of the World Day for Decent Work, celebrated annually on October 7, is an opportunity for dialogue and action. This year’s theme, ‘For democracy that delivers decent work,’ underscores the importance of creating employment opportunities for young Ghanaians, particularly those with good education who struggle to find jobs matching their skills. Secretary-General Mr. Joshua Ansah called on social partners, including the government and employers, to collaborate with unions to ensure that economic growth translates into employment.

The TUC statement encouraged businesses to adopt fair labor practices and provide safe working conditions, highlighting that this approach can significantly enhance productivity in Ghana. It also urged workers and employers to commit to the principles of the Decent Work Framework outlined by the International Labour Organisation (ILO). The initiative invites all stakeholders, including the government, employers, and the general public, to join in celebrating the day, emphasizing that decent work is vital for Ghana’s future.

The United Nations dedicates this day to commemorate Decent Work globally. The TUC defines decent work as opportunities that are productive, provide fair income, ensure workplace security, and offer social protection for families. The day aims to enhance prospects for personal development and social integration while ensuring equal opportunities and treatment for both men and women.

In reaffirming its commitment to promoting decent work principles, the TUC and its affiliates advocate for fair incomes, decent pensions, safe and healthy working environments, improved working conditions, and fair labor practices. The TUC will continue advocating for economic and social policies that provide access to work, enabling individuals and families to rise above poverty.

Decent work is presented as a conduit through which societies can translate economic growth into improved living conditions. The TUC emphasizes that this is the sustainable path to poverty reduction, equitable, inclusive, and sustainable development. While employment creation is central to the concept of decent work, it encompasses more than just job provision. It is fundamentally about respect, equality, fairness, safety, and fostering a dialogue between employers and employees.

The TUC concludes that decent work involves more than fair wages; it encompasses respect for rights, including freedom of association and collective bargaining, and offers opportunities for growth, development, and protection of vulnerable societal segments.
