Ramadan: Al-Habibiyyah, centre educates women on etiquette of prayer

Zayma Islamic Research Centre, an NGO, has admonished Muslim women to uphold the virtues of Salat (prayer) in accordance with the Holy Qur’an and teachings of Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him).

The centre’s National Coordinator, Mrs Shifa’a Garba gave the admonition at a women Ramadan lecture organised by the Al-Habibiyyah Islamic Society, on Saturday in Abuja.

Garba also enjoined muslim women on the need to respect the Islamic values and ensure high sense of modesty during and after the month of Ramadan.

She said that salat was the daily ritual prayer enjoined upon all Muslims as one of the five Pillars of Islam.

Garba said: “Each Salat is preceded by ablution, and prayer is categorised as Salat al-fajr (dawn) al-zuhr (mid day), al-asr (afternoon), al-magrib (sun set) and al-Isha (evening).

“Individual performance of salat is permissible and can be offered in any clean space either at home or at work, while collective worship in the mosque has special merit.

“Completing the five daily prayers as taught by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is an obligation for all Muslims especially women who are home managers.”

She added that the status of Salat in Islam was such a key part of a Muslim’s life, adding, “so much so that one could never be separated from Salat.”

The national coordinator said observance of five daily salat prevents indecency and wickedness, erase sins, as well as serves as a solution to all problems.

Garba said: “Salat leads to bountiful rewards and salat is a means to attain Allah’s love and become closer to Him.”

Also, Mrs Maryam Mohammed, who described the lecture as timely, commended Al-habibiyyah for giving priority to the issue of gender.

Group urges Benue governor-elect not to disappoint

A group, the Alia Alliance, has urged Benue governor-elect, Rev. Hyacinth Alia to strive to meet the huge expectations of the people who voted him to bring about changes in the state.

The group gave the advice when its officials led by the Board Chairman of the Alliance, Mr Peter Ashiekaa, paid a congratulatory visit to the governor-elect on Sunday in Makurdi.

The Chairman said that the victory was a resounding testimony to the people’s resolve to change and redirect the path and course of their history.

“It is also a resounding statement of the people’s confidence in your ability to lead them out of the woods to a Benue of growth and prosperity.

“We pray God to guide and direct you, and give you the knowledge, wisdom and strength needed for your journey.

“As a group, we at the Alia Alliance are proud to be associated with this process and the outcome, and we pledge and commit to supporting your administration in all ways possible to ensure your success,” he added.

Also speaking, Mr Jimmy Ajim, a member of the board, commended the governor-elect for his doggedness “that calmed all the storms before, during and after the general elections”.

Ajim who is also the President of Ior Gboko Foundation, said they would partner with Alia to transform, empower, reform and uplift Benue indigenes, to build a better state.

In his response, the governor-elect thanked the group for its support and pledged to work hard with divine directions to meet the people’s expectations.

“God rewards hard work, especially when you don’t count the cost, it pays more.

“I am not coming for money, I have learnt to work and make money, I am not coming to seek fame, I have worked to make a name.

“We need to work together to develop the state, it is ours and nobody will do this for us, and we are not doing this for anyone but for ourselves.

“God has chosen me not because I am the most qualified. He doesn’t call the qualified but qualifies who He calls. I know with your prayers and assistance, we will prevail,” he added.

Alia tasked the group to help mentor the youth on good conduct, and to play active role in the renewal and development of Benue.

“It is paramount to start correcting wrong deeds, especially as it concerns leadership and mentorship.

“The idea of having or acting as stooge, having manipulative leaders and followers should be corrected,” he said.

He pledged not to disappoint the ordinary people who voted him to provide good leadership and better direction to the state.

Nigeria wins 3rd game against Ghana at NCF Women’s Invitational

Nigeria has won her third game against Ghana by 62 runs at the ongoing Nigeria Cricket Federation (NCF) Women’s Invitational in Lagos.

The game at the Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS) Cricket Oval on Friday, saw the Ghanaian team win toss and opted to field.

Nigeria had a slow start to the game but usual suspects Salome Sunday 27(18) and Agatha Obulor 25(34) helped kept the scoreboard ticking for the Nigerian side.

The hosts eventually sailed to 120 runs for the loss of four wickets in 20 overs.

In the second innings, Ghana relied on Rasidatu Salia 20(29) and Komalpreet Grewal 11(23) to help see the side reach the target but their efforts wasn’t enough.

Nigeria’s Racheal Samson 4/18 and Peculiar Agboya 2/18 did the damage against the Ghanaian side as they limited their West African rivals to 58 for the loss of 8 wickets in 20 overs.

After the game, Rhyda Ofori, Captain of the Ghanaian side, said there are lots of lessons garnered so far from the tournament.

“We lost all our matches in the tournament, but it’s not the end of Women’s cricket in Ghana.

“We have learnt some lessons here and we will take it home and improve on our game. Hopefully, we will come back better and stronger,” Ofori said.

On her part, Blessing Etim, Captain of the Nigerian team, lauded her team’s efforts, adding however that they needed to do more.

“The win means a lot to us because we have put up a great effort and teamwork to ensure that we go unbeaten throughout this tournament.

“Although we need to come through with our batting and bring our ‘A’ game as well as we face Rwanda on Saturday,” Etim added.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Ghana has exited the tournament, losing all of its matches to Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Cameroon, along side Nigeria.

Meanwhile, host Nigeria will face Rwanda in the last group game while Sierra Leone will face Cameroon, both on Saturday.

The tournament, which began on Monday, is expected to end on Sunday.

Magashi unveils roads, other projects in NDA

The Minister of Defence, retired Maj.- Gen. Bashir Magashi, on Friday, inaugurated multiple projects at the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), Kaduna, in a bid to enhance the training of cadets.

The projects inaugurated included roads in honour of war heroes and the NDA-NAF Base Link Road and new gate named after Magashi.

The defence minister inspected concrete fence and block fence projects and also unveiled adventure obstacle course where demonstration was carried out by the cadets.

He also witnessed river assault crossing demonstration by the cadets of the 70th Regular Course at the Nigerian Air Force dam.

Speaking to newsmen after the inauguration, Magashi said he has expectation that the Armed Forces of Nigeria are doing their best in carrying out their constitutional duties to the nation.

He said that his visit was also to see areas of improvement in the training and other aspects of soldiering in the Academy to ensure good breed of officers.

On security, Magashi said there has been much improvement as seen in the North-East and North-West, adding that gradually people would return to civilised way of doing things in the country.

He expressed gratitude for the project named after him at the NDA while also commending the commandant for his vision and innovations in the training of the cadets.

Earlier, the Commandant of the Academy, Maj.-Gen. Ibrahim Manu-Yusuf, said the projects would enhance the security architecture of the academy.

He said they had also open ways for additional areas of training.

He thanked the Minister; Chief of Defence Staff, Chief of Army Staff and other service chiefs for supporting the institution.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Chief of Defence Staff and Chief of Army Staff visited the NDA on March 30 and had inaugurated 15 troops-carrying vehicles and other projects.

Rep Abdulraheem joins race for Speaker

Rep. Abdulraheem Olawuyi (APC-Kwara) has joined the race for the Speaker of the House of Representatives for the 10th National Assembly.

Olawuyi, who is representing Ekiti, Isin, Irepodun and Oke-ero Federal Constituency of Kwara, confirmed that he would officially declare his intention on April 4, in Abuja.

Olawuyi, who is the Chairman, House Committee on Emergency and Disaster Preparedness, said this in a statement he personally issued to newsmen in Abuja on Saturday.

The lawmaker said he has consulted widely on his intention to contest the position and expressed delight at the feedback.

Olawuyi, a third termer and ranking member in the House of Reps, said he believed he possed the needed experience to make the office of the speaker better, if elected by his colleagues.

He said other lawmakers, serving and newly elected members of the House of Reps would be in attendance at his official declaration.

“I assure you that, if elected, I will strive to promote policies that will benefit all Nigerians from various backgrounds and will work with all parties to unite the country.

“I am genuinely looking forward to meet fellow lawmakers, share my vision with them, and listen to their ideas on how to improve the lots of the people, if elected as the speaker,” Olawuyi stated.
