“Djerba Cult” meeting starts in conjunction with pilgrimage to El Ghriba in Djerba

The "Djerba Cult" meeting, organised by the Heritage Laboratory of the Faculty of Letters, Arts and Humanities of Manouba as part of its scientific and cultural activities, began on Sunday in Djerba.

The meeting, which has been taking place for ten years in conjunction with the pilgrimage to Ghriba, is a new opportunity to present to the public the results of the research and scientific work carried out by students on the history and heritage of the island of Djerba.

The Djerba Cult meeting began with a scientific symposium on the movements of the "Djerbians" outside the island, the culinary heritage of this region and the memories of the inhabitants of different ethnicities and beliefs (Muslims, Jews, Christians, Greeks).

The Djerba Cult programme includes film screenings followed by debates, in particular The History of Religious Plurality in Tunisia" by the Tunisian Association for the Support of Minorities, "The Plural Heritage of the Island of Djerba" by Zied Haddad and "The Last Journey" by Issam Saidi.

US embassy announces opening of applications for $1.5 NOFO for women working in agriculture

The U.S. embassy has recently announced the opening of applications for a $1.5 million Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) dedicated to women working in the agricultural sector.

It said in a statement the grant aims to address the vulnerability of Tunisia's agricultural sector to climate change, as well as increased food security threats, particularly for women's economic security and empowerment.

The first objective of the NOFO is to enable women-led cooperatives to optimise their use of natural resources to mitigate the challenges caused by climate change, it pointed out.

The second is to help women-led cooperatives to improve business acumen and increase revenue throughout the value chain of their products, according to the statement.

Sousse-based Avionav has exported hundreds of light single-engine aircraft since 2007 (CEO)

The Sousse-based "Avionav" company, a manufacturer of 2 to 4-seater light aircraft recently made its first two-seater light aircraft and exported a first model to a customer in an African country in March 2023, said Avionav CEO Foued El-Kamel.

Speaking to TAP, on the sidelines of a ceremony held by "Avionav" company, on the renewal of its safety certificate and a flight authorisation and the marketing of its products in Portugal, El-Kamel underlined that the company continues to cooperate with the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) so as to obtain the certificate of conformity with European standards and beyond that to market its aircraft in Poland and in the rest of the European countries.

"The company has, since 2007, exported hundreds of light single-engine aircraft, manufactured in Tunisia, which have won the appreciation of customers in different countries around the world." All components of the plane, except the engine, are made in the company's workshops in Borjine, Sousse, he added.

CEO of the Foreign Investment Promotion Agency (FIPA-Tunisia) Jalel Tabib told TAP the aircraft's components manufacturing sector covers more than 80 specialised Tunisian companies, offering nearly 17,000 jobs and representing nearly 4% of the country's GDP.

The volume of foreign investment increased 18% in 2022 compared to 2021.

In the first quarter of 2023, this volume increased nearly 15% compared to the same period of 2022.

Geingob to chair SADC Organ Troika Extra-ordinary Summit in Windhoek

President Hage Geingob is expected to chair the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) Organ Troika Extraordinary Summit plus the Force Intervention Brigade (FIB) Troop Contributing Countries (TCCs) in Windhoek on Monday.

The Presidency in a media statement here Sunday said Geingob who is currently the Chairperson of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defense and Security Cooperation will open the Extra-Ordinary Summit that will discuss matters of peace and security in the Region and the security situation in the Eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The SADC organ on Politics, Defense and Security Cooperation is responsible for promoting peace and security in the SADC Region and is mandated to steer and provide member states with direction regarding matters that threaten peace, security and stability in the region.

Heads of State and Government of the SADC Organ Troika, comprising Geingob, outgoing Chairperson of the SADC Organ President Cyril Ramaphosa, and the incoming Chairperson of the SADC Organ President Hakainde Hichilima will attend the Extra-Ordinary Summit plus the FIB TCCs.

“Additionally, Heads of State and government from the Republic of Angola, the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Republic of Malawi and the United Republic of Tanzania are all expected to attend the Summit as well,” the Presidency indicated.

The Summit will be preceded by the Ministerial meeting on 07 May 2023.

The FIB, it said is the force deployed in the Democratic Republic of Congo within the United Nations peacekeeping mission.

Meanwhile, Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan arrived at the Hosea Kutako International Airport on Sunday, ahead of the Extraordinary Organ Troika Summit plus the SADC Troika and FIB TCCs.

Hassan was received by Namibia's Deputy Minister of Defence and Veteran Affairs, Hilma Nikanor.
