Accra: Czech rescue teams have brought 238 children and adults to safety from two holiday camps after heavy rainfall. The camps in the Jesenk region, near the border with Poland, were threatened by flooding from the Cern½ river, Radio Prague reported on Sunday, citing the authorities.
According to Ghana News Agency, up to 130 millilitres of rain were expected in Jesenk by Sunday evening, prompting a flood warning. In neighbouring Poland, around the southern cities of Krak³w and Katowice, the highest storm warning level was in effect. From Sunday to Monday morning, a total of 150 millilitres of rain was expected, as stated by a meteorologist from the state weather service IMGW.
The Polish fire brigade recorded more than 180 operations due to the thunderstorms, as reported by the news agency PAP. Flooded roads had to be cleared, basements pumped out, or fallen trees removed. Weather and flood warnings, albeit slightly reduced, were also in effect for the entire eastern half of Poland.
In Slovakia, the water levels of many streams and rivers rose due to the rain, resulting in flooded roads. Authorities declared the highest flood warning level in four districts in the tri-border area with Poland and the Czech Republic.
