Somanya: Assistant Divisional Officer grade II (ADOII) Thaddeus Jabal Mabanye, the Public Relations Officer of Somanya Municipal Fire Station, has urged students to prioritize fire safety in dormitories and off-campus housing. He emphasized that fire safety is a critical aspect of everyday life, as effective safety measures and procedures can significantly reduce the risk of injury and save lives.

According to Ghana News Agency, ADOII Mabanye addressed students at the University of Environment and Sustainable Development (UESD) in Somanya during the university's fifth commencement lecture. He highlighted the unique challenges faced by students living away from home, particularly the lack of understanding regarding potential fire risks in dormitories and off-campus housing.

ADOII Mabanye pointed out that negligence and carelessness in handling electric power appliances could lead to fire outbreaks. He stressed the importance of adhering to fire safety sensitization programs and education provided to students. Key safety measures included possessing and knowing how to use fire extinguishers, monitoring smoke, and cooking carefully.

Additional safety tips include using only one electrical appliance per socket and keeping paper, clothes, and flammable liquids away from stoves or LPG stoves. Students were also encouraged to practice their escape plans regularly by identifying at least two ways out of every room.

He assured students that the Somanya Municipal Fire Station is dedicated to supporting the university community by providing resources and assistance. The fire station will collaborate with the university during Campus Fire Safety Month to raise awareness about fire prevention strategies. ADOII Mabanye encouraged the community to seek guidance on best practices for maintaining a safe living environment.
