They said the rising cost of living had made extravagant celebrations less appealing, with many opting for affordable and meaningful ways to mark the occasion.
According to Ghana News Agency, the current economic situation in Ghana has compelled people to make budgeting a necessity, citing that high prices of goods and services have even affected prices of traditional Valentine's Day gifts such as chocolates and flowers. Speaking to the agency, Mr. Samuel Asante, a 29-year-old teacher, emphasized that Valentine's Day celebrations do not have to be expensive. He shared that he and his girlfriend have agreed to a simple home-cooked dinner instead of dining out, suggesting that cooking together can still offer a great experience.
Mr. Charles Teye, a mobile money vendor, echoed similar sentiments, stating his intention to celebrate in ways that would not strain his finances. He mentioned plans to have movie nights at home using his television and Netflix account, along with exchanging messages and social media posts as simple yet meaningful gestures. On the other hand, Mr. Eben Abui, a hairstylist, expressed his disinterest in celebrating Valentine's Day, citing that it is not a practice found in the Bible.
Meanwhile, Mr. Courage Garr, an electrical engineer, shared his relief in being single, recounting how previous celebrations had strained his finances, leaving him with little after the occasion. This sentiment of financial caution was also reflected by Madam Celestine Wood, a trader in Valentine accessories at Tema Community One, who highlighted the range of affordable products available that cater to different budgets.
Mr. Gorge Ofori, the owner of a drinking spot in Tema, remarked on the anticipated demand for drinks during Valentine's Day celebrations, despite complaints of financial constraints. He expressed confidence that his stocked bar would attract patrons looking to partake in the festivities.
