Accra: The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has commended the Ghana Police Service for the arrest of a suspect in connection with the murder of investigative journalist Ahmed Suale. The suspect, Daniel Owusu Koranteng, also known as Amakye, was arraigned on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, but was remanded to police custody by the Madina District Court. He is set to reappear before the court on April 1, 2025.

According to Ghana News Agency, the GJA has been in contact with senior police officers to obtain details about the arrest and prosecution of the suspect. The Association expressed appreciation for the efforts of Inspector-General of Police Christian Tetteh Yohuno and the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department DCOP Lydia Yaako Donkor, highlighting this as a significant step towards addressing the murder of the investigative journalist.

The GJA noted that more than six years after the assassination of Ahmed Suale on January 16, 2019, this marks the first substantial progress in bringing the suspected killers to justice. Despite the positive development, the Association urged the Police to ensure that other suspects in the case are also apprehended and prosecuted.

Mr. Kofi Yeboah, GJA General Secretary, emphasized that the arrest and prosecution of Daniel Owusu Koranteng is seen as the beginning of a broader effort to secure justice for Ahmed Suale and to support media freedom advocates in Ghana and abroad. The unresolved case has negatively impacted Ghana's standing on the World Press Freedom Index over the past six years.

Last month, the GJA issued an ultimatum to take the Ahmed Suale case to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Community Court of Justice by the end of March 2025 if no concrete actions were taken by the Police. The GJA plans to engage further with Police leadership to gather more details on the prosecution and investigation, with updates to be provided to the public.

In addition to the Suale case, the GJA intends to demand updates on other unresolved cases of assaults against journalists, including that of Latif Iddrisu. The Association has also informed its international partners, including the Federation of African Journalists and the International Federation of Journalists, about the developments. These organizations have expressed their commitment to pursuing the Ahmed Suale case in international forums to seek justice.
