Accra: The Ghana Weightlifting Federation (GWF) has conducted a foundational course at the University of Ghana, focusing on enhancing technical standards among universities.
According to Ghana News Agency, the course was spearheaded by Dr. Kyle Pierce, Chairman of the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) Coaching and Research Committee. It involved Sports Directors from universities and young coaches, who were guided through essential techniques for practicing weightlifting. The GWF has partnered with the organizers of the Ghana Universities Sports Association (GUSA) games to integrate weightlifting into university sports programs.
Dr. Kyle Pierce expressed his excitement in an interview with GNA Sports about leading this initiative to introduce the sport at the tertiary level. He emphasized the long-term vision of including weightlifting as part of the GUSA Games and the African University Games. 'I am always happy to be in Ghana to help out in the development of weightlifting and I hope we can achieve our goal in spreading the sport across the country,' he said.
Mr. Kenneth Odeng Adade, Secretary-General of the Ghana Weightlifting Federation, highlighted to GNA Sports that the course aims to establish weightlifting as a leading sport, and equipping universities with fundamental skills is a crucial step. He remarked, 'This is a great opportunity for these universities to embrace sport. Weightlifting is a global sport and it is being competed everywhere. Introducing the sport at the GUSA games has been in the pipeline and we feel it is high time to bring it to their doorsteps.'
The GWF Scribe described the course as timely and transformative for sports development in Ghana. He appreciated the participants for their dedication and urged them to apply the knowledge gained to uplift the sport at the grassroots level.
