Haridwar: At least six people have died in a stampede at a Hindu temple in India, authorities said on Sunday. The incident occurred on a staircase in front of the Mansa Devi Temple in the northern Indian city of Haridwar.
According to Ghana News Agency, a police statement on Instagram indicated that the stampede was possibly triggered by a rumor about the risk of electrocution from an exposed wire. Media reports also mentioned numerous injuries resulting from the incident.
The chief minister of the state of Uttarakhand, Pushkar Singh Dhami, announced on X that an investigation would be conducted and financial support would be provided to the victims. India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences to the victims’ families on the platform.
