Cape coast: The Upper Denkyira East Municipal Assembly has announced plans to construct a modern 24-hour market as part of efforts to implement the government’s national 24-hour economy initiative. Scheduled to begin in October and be completed within six months, the project aims to enhance local trade, create jobs, and drive economic growth in the municipality.

According to Ghana News Agency, the new market will be strategically located near the Municipal Circuit Court, close to the central market, to ease congestion and improve accessibility to goods and services. Mr. George Anane Coleman, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), stated that the facility would be a game-changer for local businesses, particularly small-scale traders and farmers. “The 24-hour economy is not a dream; it’s a reality we are preparing for,” he said.

He added that the market would feature modern amenities, including lighting systems, sanitation facilities, security services, and transport infrastructure to support round-the-clock operations. The facility will also have designated areas for fresh food, clothing, electronics, and night vending, as well as storage and cold room facilities to preserve perishable goods. It will be environmentally friendly and accessible to persons with disabilities.

Mr. Coleman emphasized that the project is part of a broader strategy to stimulate economic activity, reduce unemployment, and curb rural-urban migration. “A functioning 24-hour market means more opportunities for transport operators, food vendors, traders, and security personnel. It’s a win for all,” he noted.

The Assembly has secured full funding through the District Assemblies Common Fund and is completing the necessary documentation to hand over the contract for commencement. With this initiative, Upper Denkyira East positions itself as a frontrunner in embracing Ghana’s 24-hour economy agenda and sets a model for other districts to follow.
