Accra: Men in leadership have been encouraged to actively promote women’s participation in leadership and decision-making roles. They are urged to use their power and platforms to elevate women by mentoring and supporting them to realise their full potential.

According to Ghana News Agency, Dr Elisha Attai, Global President of the African Women Leadership Organisation (AWLO), emphasized the need for men to be advocates and mentors in public spaces, championing equality. Speaking at the opening of the AWLO HeForShe Summit in Accra, Dr Attai highlighted the critical role of male leadership in advancing women’s roles in all sectors, including boardrooms, parliaments, schools, and communities.

The summit, themed ‘Redefining Masculinity: Men as Catalysts for Women’s Development,’ brought together AWLO leaders from across the continent along with various women’s groups. Dr Attai challenged men to question inherited norms and redefine masculinity by mentoring and sponsoring women in the workplace. He clarified that this initiative is about justice and fairness, not charity, emphasizing that when women rise, humanity benefits.

Reverend Dr Nanayaa Tina Owusu-Prempeh, President of Women in Leadership International, supported this perspective by stating that women’s empowerment should be seen as complementary, not competitive. She urged both men and women to change their perceptions, stating that true masculinity aligns with women’s empowerment. Dr Owusu-Prempeh also called on the Government to expedite gender-inclusive policies to enhance women’s participation in leadership roles.

The African Women in Leadership Organisation (AWLO), a not-for-profit body, has been empowering women leaders across Africa and the diaspora for over 15 years. AWLO remains committed to dialogue and action towards women’s empowerment, addressing the diverse challenges faced by women globally.
