Accra: President John Dramani Mahama recently inspected the ongoing construction works on the 33.4km Ofankor-Nsawam Road Dualisation project, which is currently 75 percent complete. The project, undertaken by Maripoma Enterprise Limited, is expected to be completed by the end of the second quarter of 2026.

According to Ghana News Agency, President Mahama, accompanied by Mr. Kwame Governs Agbodza, the Minister of Roads and Highways, was shown around the project by Mr. Kwabena Bimpong, the Chief Resident Engineer. During the visit, President Mahama emphasized the importance of the Ofankor-Nsawam Road as a key arterial route connecting Accra and Kumasi, the two largest cities in Ghana. He stressed that any delays or issues with the project impact a significant number of commuters due to the heavy traffic on this road.

The President expressed concern over the completion timeline and urged Maripoma Enterprise Ltd to adhere to their commitment of finishing the project by mid-2026. He also highlighted the government’s awareness of public complaints about traffic congestion and urged the contractors to ensure smooth traffic flow during construction.

President Mahama raised questions about the funding of the project, noting that an initial loan had been exhausted, necessitating supplementary funding of almost $78 million from government resources. He called for an investigation into whether the project’s cost estimates were properly conducted.

Despite these concerns, President Mahama noted the improved satisfaction among drivers using the road and hoped for continued traffic management until the project’s completion. He reiterated the government’s commitment to providing sufficient resources under the Big Push Programme, with GHS 14 billion allocated for this year and GHS 30 billion for the next.

Mr. Kwame Governs Agbodza confirmed that the government had cleared over $77 million in arrears owed to the contractor by the previous administration. He expressed optimism that the project would progress smoothly if the current pace of work is maintained.
