Accra: The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has initiated a week-long General Competency Development Programme aimed at enhancing leadership skills and improving service delivery among its senior officers. The inaugural session commenced on September 15, 2025, at the GRA Training Academy in Kpetoe, Volta Region. This initiative is part of a comprehensive plan to develop the capacities of 4,000 officers throughout the performance year.

According to Ghana News Agency, the training is themed ‘Training and Development: Building Competencies for Improved Performance’ and seeks to align staff performance with GRA’s transformation goals and revenue targets. Dr. Alexander Adomako, Commissioner for Support Services Division (SSD), highlighted the programme as a strategic intervention to boost efficiency and professionalism across the Authority’s units.

Dr. Adomako emphasized that the training is a deliberate strategy to enhance leadership, deepen knowledge, and improve service delivery within the Ghana Revenue Authority. He reminded participants that senior officers are leaders whose conduct and influence directly impact the Authority’s image and effectiveness. He commended the Training and Development Department, Human Resources, Communications and Public Affairs, and other collaborating units for creating a forward-looking programme.

The training will focus on eight key areas aimed at building a ‘total tax base’ of officers capable of addressing taxpayer needs across Customs, Domestic Tax, and Support Services. Dr. Adomako stressed the importance of responding confidently to enquiries beyond their immediate divisions to strengthen teamwork and efficiency. He urged participants to create a collective identity as pioneers of the competency programme.

Mr. Augustine Adjei-Sefah, Head of Training and Development, noted that the programme is designed to prepare officers for leadership roles and enhance ethical and customer-centric service delivery. The modules will cover leadership, customer service, ethics, values, code of conduct, communication, GRA policies, and selected topics in Customs and Domestic Tax operations. This investment in training is crucial for achieving GRA’s vision of professionalism, integrity, and excellence, with a long-term goal of raising revenue equivalent to 20% of Ghana’s GDP.

The opening ceremony was attended by Deputy Commissioners, the Commandant of the Training Academy, training coordinators, facilitators, resource persons, participants, and representatives of the Chiefs of Kpetoe.
