Accra: Madam Ernestina Adzim, Volta Regional Field Officer, Ghana Coalition of NGOs in Health, emphasized the critical role Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and NGOs play in the success of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination exercise, highlighting the need for strong community participation to achieve full coverage.

According to Ghana News Agency, Madam Adzim called on traditional and religious leaders, teachers, and other stakeholders to support the campaign by encouraging families to present their daughters aged between nine and 14 years for vaccination. She noted that cervical cancer is a leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women and that the HPV vaccine is an effective prevention tool.

In another development, Mr. Samuel Yao Atidzah, Executive Director of GOSANET Foundation, reiterated the essential role of CSOs and NGOs in the campaign’s success. He outlined their responsibilities, including community sensitization, education in religious and educational institutions, local media engagement, and mobilization of parents and guardians. CSOs could also advocate for government prioritization of immunization, resource allocation, and transparency to address challenges such as stockouts or misinformation.

Mr. Atidzah emphasized the importance of supporting vulnerable populations, especially girls in hard-to-reach areas, orphanages, and disadvantaged homes, through partnerships with health authorities and schools. He noted that the campaign in the Volta region is led by the Ghana Health Service, with support from GAVI, the Coalition of NGOs in Health, and partners including GOSANET Foundation. The nationwide HPV vaccination for girls aged nine to 14 is scheduled from 7th to 11th October, 2025.
