Accra: The Western Regional Directorate of the Ghana Health Service has taken delivery of 20,000 doses of Mpox vaccines to help save lives and break the transmission cycle. Dr. Gifty Amugi, Western Regional Public Health Director, stated that the 21-day vaccination exercise would involve a four-day intensive effort in highly affected communities, followed by 17 days of regular vaccine distribution.

According to Ghana News Agency, Dr. Amugi emphasized that the vaccines are safe and approved by the Food and Drugs Authority. The region currently reports 59 active cases across 13 districts, with two recorded deaths. Dr. Amugi made these remarks at the Sub-national launch of the Mpox Vaccine in New Takoradi, attended by departmental heads and District Health Directors.

Dr. Samuel Kaba Akoriyea, Acting Director General of the Ghana Health Service, launched the Sub-national project and noted that 1,800 clinicians and health staff have been trained in surveillance. He expressed gratitude to dedicated workers and volunteers for their commitment to response activities, highlighting the importance of the vaccination campaign in preventing further deaths.

Priority for vaccination will be given to health workers, close contacts of confirmed cases, and residents in seven high-risk districts. Dr. Akoriyea urged proper hand washing and avoiding close contact with affected individuals. He called on stakeholders, including traditional leaders and the Red Cross, to contribute to the solution.

Dr. Marion Okoe, Western Regional Director of the Ghana Health Service, mentioned that the targeted vaccination would complement ongoing efforts in surveillance, case management, and home care. Dr. Frank Lule from the WHO country office reported that the African Region has recorded 120 deaths from 30,000 confirmed cases and assured continued support from WHO to combat the condition in Ghana.

Following the launch, the team engaged in community outreach and vaccination activities.
