Techiman: The Assistant Superintendent of Police, (ASP) Gideon Nanteeb Gutin, the Bono East Regional Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), has expressed concern regarding the escalating road crash incidents in the region.

According to Ghana News Agency, ASP Gutin highlighted that at least three crashes occur daily, specifically on the Techiman-Akumadan-Offinso and Techiman-Buipe highways. He emphasized the need for collective action to mitigate the situation and protect lives and property. In an interview at Techiman, ASP Gutin also noted an increase in crash fatalities, with at least one death reported daily.

Between March and September 2025, the region recorded 119 road crashes, comprising 30 fatal, 36 serious, and 48 minor incidents. These involved 112 vehicles, including 66 commercial and 46 private vehicles. Additionally, 34 individuals were killed, and 259 sustained injuries. The period also saw crashes involving 24 tricycles and two motorbikes.

ASP Gutin attributed the crashes primarily to driver errors such as excessive speeding, wrongful overtaking, and substance abuse, including alcohol consumption by some commercial drivers. In response, the MTTD has initiated snap-check operations on major highways to curb the incidents.

He also voiced concerns about increasing substance abuse among tricycle riders in the region, urging stakeholder collaboration to address the issue. The MTTD, along with other road agencies and stakeholders, has intensified public education on road safety and called for further support to sensitize drivers and motorists about road safety regulations and signs.

ASP Gutin warned against drunk-driving and road negligence, stating that offenders would face prosecution. He referenced a recent incident involving a Rhino Truck with registration number AC 1763-20, which, while carrying lumber from Kumasi to Bolgatanga, crashed on the Techiman-Tanoso stretch near Techiman Senior High School on October 3, 2025. Although no casualties were reported, the highway was obstructed for several hours, prompting ASP Gutin to advise drivers on that route to be mindful of the sharp curves and adhere to road signs.
