Vatican city: A motorcycle bearing the signature of Pope Leo XIV has been sold at auction for a staggering £130,000 ($151,408), excluding fees and taxes. The unique vehicle, which the Pope signed in September at the Vatican, was auctioned by RM Sotheby’s, as announced on Saturday. Images on the auction house’s website feature the pontiff seated on the motorcycle and holding a matching helmet, illustrating the significance of the event.

According to Ghana News Agency, the motorcycle, a BMW R 18 Transcontinental, was the centerpiece of a three-day journey undertaken by a group known as the Jesus Bikers. This pilgrimage began in Schaafheim, a small town near Frankfurt, and concluded at St Peter’s Square in Rome. Inspired by the design of the popemobile, the white motorcycle attracted significant interest, with bidding starting at £30,000 before rapidly escalating to the final sale price.

The proceeds from the auction are earmarked for charitable causes. According to RM Sotheby’s, the funds will support the Pontifical Mission Societies in Austria and aid children in Madagascar. Additionally, the buyer is responsible for more than the hammer price, facing an extra 20% fee and a 19% value-added tax (VAT) on this fee.
