Accra: Mrs Maria Kwami Gwira, a communications strategist and media development advocate, has highlighted the transformative impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies on media and journalism, emphasizing their role in connecting humanity with global audiences and enhancing the quality of media work. According to Ghana News Agency, Mrs Gwira discussed the integration of AI in newsrooms worldwide, noting its capabilities in automating and streamlining tasks. Nonetheless, she stressed the importance of maintaining core journalistic functions such as investigative reporting and upholding the truth. Mrs Gwira made these remarks during her keynote address at the 2025 World Press Freedom Day celebration in Ho, themed 'Reporting in the Brave New World - The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Press Freedom and the Media.' She pointed out that AI's evolution is significantly affecting information gathering, processing, and dissemination, leading to increased productivity and quality. Mrs Gwira, who serves as the Executive Director of Dede Media Foundation, emphasized AI's potential to expand journalism's horizons while cautioning against the risks of uncritical AI adoption. Mrs Gwira warned of ethical and legal concerns related to AI, such as bias, transparency, and the potential replacement of human judgment. She also highlighted the dangers of AI being used for mass control or unethical purposes, advocating for a balanced approach to AI integration in journalism. She detailed various types of AI, including Narrow AI, General AI, and Superintelligent systems, while acknowledging the challenges of using AI to generate content, particularly in underrepresented societies. Mrs Gwira cited the erasure of historical data from US-government websites as a concern for accurate information dissemination. Mrs Gwira called for constant human oversight of AI-generated content to ensure accuracy and adherence to journalistic standards. She identified legal issues such as intellectual property disputes, data privacy, and combating AI biases as crucial considerations. She encouraged journalists to leverage AI tools for personalized content delivery and enhanced reader interaction, while maintaining a focus on ethical standards and cultural context.
