Akwatia: Voting has officially concluded across the 119 polling stations in the Akwatia Constituency, where approximately 52,000 registered voters were called to participate in a parliamentary by-election. This election was necessitated by the passing of the sitting Member of Parliament, Mr. Ernest Yaw Kumi of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who had secured the seat during the 2024 general election.
According to Ghana News Agency, polling stations opened their doors at 0700 hours and closed at 1700 hours. The process of sorting and counting the ballots is currently underway, with heightened security measures and restricted movement around the voting areas to ensure a smooth and secure process.
The deployment of election materials started early, around 0400 hours, allowing some polling stations within Akwatia Township to complete their setup by 0600 hours. The voting process proceeded generally without incident, although there was a reported scuffle between executives of the NPP and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) at the Akwatia Lorry Station Polling Centre on Tuesday afternoon.
The Electoral Commission (EC) has established a constituency collation centre in Akwatia, where the winner of the election will be announced. The contest is primarily between Mr. Solomon Kwame Asumadu of the NPP, a licensed small-scale miner and graduate of All Nations University, and Mr. Bernard Bediako Baidoo of the NDC, a lawyer and constituency secretary of the NDC.
Akwatia is known as a traditional swing seat, having alternated between the NPP and NDC since 1992, making this by-election a significant test of political strength for both parties.
