Experts call for encouraging technological innovation to meet needs of people with disabilities

Experts have called on the authorities to encourage technological innovation so as to meet the needs of people with disabilities. Tunisia brims with young people with the skills to develop technological innovation to help people with disabilities integrate into working life, they added at a scientific meeting on "The Role of Modern Technologies in the Professional and Social Integration of People with Disabilities", held Saturday at the headquarters of the International Centre for the Advancement of People with Disabilities in partnership with the Tunisian Centre for Global Security Studies. Taking the floor, Nizar Salmi, Director of the International Centre for the Advancement of People with Disabilities, said young people need financial and logistical support so as to invest in modern technologies and launch their own projects. He further recalled the previous announcement by the former minister of vocational training and employment of the creation of a technology laboratory within the International Cen tre for the Advancement of People with Disabilities. For his part, Ezzedine Zayani, President of the Tunisian Centre for Global Security Studies, said that there were many technological innovations that could make life easier for people with disabilities, such as applications, touch screens, conversion of written speech into audible speech, voice recognition software, etc. Source: Agence Tunis Afrique Presse

Promoting tourism at heart of run-off local elections candidates’ agenda in Matmata

Candidates in the run-off local elections Lassad Jomni and Abdessalem Mohamed in Techine locality of Matmata delegation (Gabes Governorate) have launched their electoral campaigns. The two candidates, with 45.67% and 35.43% in the first round, respectively, presented their election manifesto to the region's electorate. Candidate Lassad Jomni pledged to catalyse development in the region, with a primary focus on the tourism sector, an untapped industry with substantial potential, he said. He committed to supporting the youth in starting businesses and establishing communitarian companies. Similarly, candidate Abdessalem Mohamed has centred his programme on fostering investments in the tourism sector within the region, vowing to work towards earning Matmata the UNESCO World Heritage label. Strategy paper on cooperation with AfDB discussed at working session

A working session was held Friday at the headquarters of the Employment and Vocational Training Ministry to identify the ministry's priorities as part of the development of the 2024/2028 strategy paper on cooperation with the African Development Bank (AfDB). The meeting, attended by Minister Lotfi Dhieb, focused on the attractiveness of public vocational training centres by means of promoting sports and cultural activities. This in addition to a boost to entrepreneurship and value chains in regions with high unemployment and poverty rates and low development indicators, reads an Employment Ministry press release. Improved training and upgrading and rehabilitation to enhance youth employability and meet the needs and requirements of businesses and economic sectors were also discussed. Run-off local elections in Dar Châabane-1: candidates pledge to improve healthcare services

Mohamed Hammi and Youssef Abdellatif, the two candidates in the run-off of the Dar Châabane-1 local elections, agree on the need to improve health services in the region. Candidate Mohamed Hammi, a 49-year-old manager in a private company who won 263 votes in the first round (35.16%), told TAP that his manifesto was inspired by the needs of the region and the aspirations of its inhabitants. He has pledged to improve the situation at the Dar Châabane primary health centre by building an emergency room and obstetrics and gynaecology unit. Hammi outlined his multi-faceted vision for the town, stressing his determination to modernise the road infrastructure, extend public lighting, particularly at the entrances to the town, renovate the weekly market, create recreational spaces and reopen the youth centre. On the other hand, candidate Youssef Abdellatif, a 47-year-old coffee shop owner, who won 156 votes (20.86%) in the first round, promised to equip the city's primary health centre with an emergency room, a ttract specialised medical staff and address the shortage of medicines. He also stressed the urgency of improving the environment and tackling the problem of domestic waste in the region.
