Techiman: The Assistant Chief Fire Officer (ACFO II), Reverend Naomi Ofori-Adubea Sarpong, who serves as the Bono East Regional Commander of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), has issued a public advisory cautioning against the construction of structures around fire hydrants.

According to Ghana News Agency, Rev. Sarpong emphasized that fire hydrants are essential as the only 'life-line' for firefighting efforts, urging the public to protect these vital resources in the national interest. This advice was given during an inspection of hydrants in the Techiman Metropolis, conducted by a team of fire personnel led by Rev. Sarpong, accompanied by the Techiman Market Taskforce.

Rev. Sarpong highlighted the reliance of firefighters on these hydrants as their primary water source during fire outbreaks. She urged the public to refrain from erecting unauthorized structures around hydrants to ensure firefighters can access them promptly during emergencies.

The inspection revealed that some fire hydrants were obstructed by tiles, preventing them from functioning properly. Rev. Sarpong stressed the importance of fire safety preparedness and suggested the construction of additional hydrants at the Techiman Central market. She also encouraged traders and market women to adopt fire precautionary and safety measures.

Furthermore, Rev. Sarpong advised shop owners and businesses to equip their workplaces with fire extinguishers to enhance fire safety.
