Accra: Dr. Cassiel Ato Baah Forson, Finance Minister Designate, has announced that the reduction of government ministries from 30 to 23 is a strategic move by the Mahama administration to cut down on expenditure. He stated that this reduction is intended to save costs associated with the seven eliminated ministries, emphasizing that the size of government directly impacts the expenditure framework.
According to Ghana News Agency, Dr. Forson made these comments during his vetting by the Appointments Committee in Parliament. This follows his nomination for the position by President John Dramani Mahama. In response to a question from Mr. Mahama Ayariga, Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Dr. Forson confirmed that the ministry reduction aligns with the government's broader strategy to reduce expenditure.
During the session, Dr. Forson addressed Mr. Chairman, explaining that reducing the number of ministries would lead to significant savings. He highlighted that the government incurs substantial costs in maintaining these ministries, and their elimination would result in automatic savings.
He further informed the Committee, chaired by Mr. Bernard Ahiafo, First Deputy Speaker and MP for Akatsi South, that the Mahama administration had already implemented other measures to reduce expenditure. Dr. Forson expressed confidence that Parliament would be impressed with the next budget he presents, should he be approved for the position.
Dr. Forson urged the House to expedite his approval as the next Finance Minister, emphasizing the importance of implementing the Mahama administration's programs designed to reduce government expenditure.
