Accra: The 2024 Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has dismissed assertions that religion and ethnicity contributed to his electoral defeat in the 2024 election. Dr. Bawumia's remarks came during an engagement with NPP officers and staff at the party's headquarters at Asylum Down in Accra, preceding his nationwide 'Thank You' tour.

According to Ghana News Agency, Dr. Bawumia emphasized that the allegations were baseless and contradicted both party dynamics and post-election research findings, categorizing them as mere propaganda. He cited his victory in the NPP's internal presidential primaries, where he was the sole Muslim among 10 aspirants-nine of whom were Christians-as evidence that his religion was not a factor in the party's loss.

Dr. Bawumia further supported his argument with data analysis, illustrating that in many constituencies, the NPP presidential candidate outperformed Christian parliamentary candidates. He mentioned the Assin South Constituency in the Central Region as an example, where he performed better than Rev. Ntim Fordjour, a Christian candidate.

The former Vice President expressed satisfaction that religion and ethnicity had not infiltrated political discourse, urging against the use of propaganda involving these aspects. He called for unity, emphasizing that both Muslims and Christians must work together for the country's benefit.

In discussing the upcoming tour, Dr. Bawumia announced that, unlike previous tours led solely by the Presidential Candidate, he would be joined by the party and invited all presidential aspirants from the NPP Presidential Primaries as a demonstration of party unity. The NPP's Thank You tour is set to commence in the Western Region on Saturday, April 26, 2025, and conclude in the Central Region, aiming to unite party members and prepare for future elections.
