Accra: The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has marked the one week celebration of the passing of Samuel Aboagye, its Deputy Director General in charge of Protocol, who died in a recent military helicopter crash.

According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Aboagye was among eight prominent individuals who perished in the crash, which took place on August 6, 2025, in Adansi Akrofrom in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. The crash claimed the lives of several high-profile figures, including Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Defence Minister, Dr. Alhaji Murtala Muhammed, the Environment, Science and Technology Minister, and Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator. Also among the deceased were Dr. Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah. They were traveling to Obuasi for the launch of the Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme, an initiative targeting illegal small-scale mining.

The event featured the signing of a book of condolences by representatives from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), Ghana Immigration Service (GIS), and Ghana Prisons Service (GPS). Both the GNFS and GPS laid wreaths in Mr. Aboagye’s honor. Mr. Ebenezer Teye-Larbi, Deputy Minister for the Interior, highlighted the lessons to be learned from the lives of the eight individuals. He described Mr. Aboagye as a dedicated and resilient person who inspired many, especially the youth, and quoted scripture to offer comfort to those mourning.

Mr. Teye-Larbi further emphasized that the tragic event should prompt those involved in illegal mining to reconsider their actions, given the very mission the victims were supporting. He called for reflection on the long-term impacts of such activities on the nation, communities, and the environment.

Major (Rtd) Dr. Joseph Bikanyi Kuyon, Director General of NADMO, expressed the difficulty many are facing in accepting the loss, describing it as a collective national tragedy. He praised Mr. Aboagye as a potential future leader and role model, whose dedication and humanity left a lasting impact on those around him. Dr. Kuyon offered condolences to Mr. Aboagye’s family and reaffirmed NADMO’s commitment to supporting them during this difficult time.
