Bagurugu: An intercultural celebration has been held at Bagurugu, a major herders' host community in the Karaga District, providing a platform for cross-cultural exchange between Fulbes (Fulani) herders and indigenous community members (Dagombas).
According to Ghana News Agency, the event aimed to foster unity and peace by bringing together Fulbes from various parts of the Northern Region and Dagombas at Bagurugu to celebrate their unique cultural practices, performances, and traditions. The focus was on promoting values of respect, understanding, and collaboration.
The celebration was organised by Changing Lives in Innovative Partnerships (CLIP), a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), as part of its Support Project for the Strengthening of Social Cohesion at the Level of Strategic Cross-Border Territories (PARCS Project). This initiative is being implemented in partnership with Acting for Life and funded by Agence Fran§aise de D©veloppement.
Mr. Sayibu Sulemana Wumbei, the CLIP-PARCS Project Officer, stated that the platform was designed to create a space for individuals from both communities to share their rich cultural heritage openly and inclusively, enhancing mutual respect and breaking down barriers.
For many years, the relationship between host communities and Fulani herders had been strained due to factors such as competition over resources, misunderstandings, farm crop destruction, and cultural differences. The intercultural celebration provided an opportunity for both groups to engage in dialogue and celebrate each other's unique cultural identities.
Mr. Wumbei added that by facilitating these interactions, the event aimed to challenge stereotypes, promote empathy, and create a deeper understanding between the two groups. This aligns with the PARCS project's objective to strengthen social cohesion in strategic cross-border areas by fostering mutual understanding, collaboration, and peaceful coexistence among diverse communities.
A Dispute Resolution Committee, comprising four local people (Dagombas) and four Fulbes, has been established to address any farmer-herder issues amicably, ensuring peaceful coexistence within these communities.
Mr. Alhassan Hassan, Chairman of the Dispute Resolution Committee, praised the event for strengthening the bond of unity and friendship between the herders and indigenous people. He commended CLIP and its partners for implementing the PARCS project, noting that the committee has been instrumental in resolving farmer-herder issues and fostering harmony.
Mr. Seidu Musah, the Karaga District Fulani Chief, expressed that the event further boosted the existing peace and harmony between herders and local people. He applauded the Dispute Resolution Committee for effectively addressing major concerns, leading to peace and togetherness in the area.
Mr. Salifu Mohammed Awal, Assistant Director at the Karaga District Assembly, commended CLIP and its partners for complementing the efforts of the Assembly to promote peaceful coexistence and ensure smooth development in the region.
