Accra: Mr. Wepia Awal Adugwala, the National President of the Peasant Farmers Association of Ghana (PFAG), has expressed the Association's eagerness to collaborate with the current government to ensure the prosperity of smallholder farmers and the agricultural sector. A statement signed by Mr. Adugwala and issued to the Ghana News Agency emphasized the Association's optimism about achieving significant progress under the current administration.

According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Adugwala highlighted the government's understanding of the agricultural sector, as demonstrated through its engagements with key stakeholders, including PFAG. He noted that the President's personal experiences as a farmer and the input from stakeholders have shaped the initiative for "agro-economic transformation through a 24-hour economy," which is set to be implemented within the first 120 days.

The PFAG has requested that President John Mahama nominate a Minister for the agricultural sector who possesses a strong agricultural background and the ability to connect with stakeholders across the value chain. Mr. Adugwala emphasized the need for a Minister who is effective, approachable, and understands the concerns and challenges faced by farmers.

He also pointed out the potential of the Pwalugu multi-purpose dam to address climate change issues and contribute significantly to the agricultural Gross Domestic Product if properly implemented. However, he criticized the previous regime for using the dam as an avenue for extortion without accountability. Recognizing the current government's agenda of Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) to ensure accountability, the Association urged the recovery of any illegal funds and requested a budgetary allocation to commence the dam's construction within the first 120 days.

Furthermore, Mr. Adugwala called on the government to uphold the Presidential pact against illegal mining and to prohibit all forms of mining in forests, farmlands, and river bodies. He stressed the urgency of developing a land reclamation plan for all damaged farmlands.

The National President expressed hope that under the current leadership, the full potential of smallholder farmers and the agricultural sector will be realized. He conveyed the Association's anticipation for a governance style that is effective, truthful, inclusive, and efficient. Mr. Adugwala concluded by congratulating the President on behalf of the farmers for being sworn in as the President of the country.
