Accra: The Ministry of Tourism Arts and Culture, in collaboration with the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) and Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly, has commissioned the first phase of the redeveloped Geese Park into the Accra Recreation and Leisure Park, in Accra. The park is an addition to the green spaces in the city and serves as a link in the network of recreational spaces, connecting with the Atta Mills Asomdwe Park.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Andrew Egyapa Mercer, Minister of Tourism Arts and Culture, stated that the commissioning of the park marked a significant step in enhancing Ghana's tourism landscape. He emphasized the importance of recreation and green spaces as essential components of a thriving urban environment, offering residents and visitors places to relax, exercise, and connect with nature. These spaces are vital for the well-being of communities and contribute to the health of the nation.
Mr. Mercer highlighted the role of such spaces in fostering social cohesion and their strategic importance in bolstering the tourism sector. He noted that tourists seek destinations offering unique experiences, and well-maintained parks are a significant attraction. The minister emphasized that investing in these spaces would enhance citizens' quality of life and attract visitors who contribute to the tourism industry's growth.
He expressed his appreciation for the efforts of the GTA and the Municipal Assembly in transforming Geese Park. He assured that the renovation was just the beginning and stressed the importance of developing more green spaces across the country to innovate Ghana as a premier tourist destination.
Mr. Akwesi Agyeman, CEO of GTA, detailed the park's various facilities designed for all ages and interests, including a mini zoo, skating park, children's eco-park, fishpond, event space, restaurant, and snack bar. He noted that the park would complement existing landmarks such as the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park and the Nationalism Park, enhancing the capital's tourism offerings.
Mr. Nii Adjei Tawiah, Municipal Chief Executive, praised the collaboration that led to the park's renovation, describing it as a legacy for Accra. He expressed gratitude for the partnership and suggested that replicating such collaborations in other municipalities would enhance the overall appearance and appeal of cities in Ghana.
