New york: President John Dramani Mahama will lead Ghana’s delegation to participate in the high-level week of the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) Session from 22nd-30th September, 2025 in New York. The President is scheduled to address the UNGA Session on Thursday, September 25th, at the UN Headquarters in New York, on the theme ‘Better Together: 80 Years and More for Peace, Development and Human Rights’.

According to Ghana News Agency, Mr Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, made this known during the Government Accountability Series press conference held at the Presidency in Accra. The Minister highlighted that President Mahama would make history as the first Ghanaian President to return to address the United Nations after leaving office for eight years and returning.

The Minister stated that as part of his engagements in New York, President Mahama would participate in several high-level meetings and side events. Notably, in his capacity as African Union Cha
mpion for African Financial Institutions, President Mahama would host a side event on Africa’s Financial Sovereignty on Wednesday, 24th September. This event aims to bring together Heads of State and Government, Finance Ministers, and representatives of the African Union and other institutions to reassert Africa’s financial sovereignty, build momentum for the establishment and effective operationalisation of AU Financial Institutions, and seek reforms in the global financial architecture.

Additionally, given President Mahama’s role as the AU Champion for Reparatory Justice for Africans and people of African Descent, and Ghana’s leadership in advocating reparative justice and reforms, Ghana will co-host a side event with the President of Senegal on Thursday, 25th September. Mr Ablakwa also mentioned that President Mahama is scheduled to hold several bilateral meetings with his counterparts to discuss issues of mutual interest.
