Akan: Mr Frank Adjei-Worlanyo, the Communications Officer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Akan Constituency of the Oti Region, has expressed concern over the removal of Chief Justice Madam Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo, describing it as a dangerous precedent. He believes this action could reshape the future of Ghana’s judiciary in a troubling manner.

According to Ghana News Agency, Mr Adjei-Worlanyo emphasized that the removal could suggest that the tenure of judicial officers might align with the political administration in power, particularly with governmental changes. He stated that this development is unsettling and could be damaging to the independence of the judiciary.

Mr Adjei-Worlanyo warned that such actions risk compromising a crucial institution. He highlighted that if the judiciary succumbs to the ruling party’s influence, the rule of law, which is fundamental to any democratic society, would be jeopardized.

He emphasized the judiciary’s unique role in upholding the rule of law and protecting citizens’ constitutional rights. Any attempt to politicize or manipulate the judiciary, he argued, would undermine the core of the 1992 Constitution. Mr Adjei-Worlanyo described the decision as strange and regrettable, expressing hope that the President might eventually reconsider the action.

He called for national vigilance, warning that the weakening of one institution could trigger a domino effect. Mr Adjei-Worlanyo urged the public to remain alert, suggesting that today it is a Chief Justice, but tomorrow, it could be any institution once considered untouchable.
