Accra: Mr. Kwame Agbodza, Minister for Roads and Highways, has inaugurated a five-member committee to review the operations of the Axle Load Control Programme to enhance its effectiveness and efficiency. The committee aims to address the impact of overloading heavy cargo vehicles, which has been linked to the premature deterioration of road pavements and increased traffic accidents.

According to Ghana News Agency, the committee comprises representatives from National Security, Private Haulage Operators, the Ghana Highway Authority, the Ministry of Transport, and the Ghana Standards Authority. A press release signed by Mr. Nasir Ahmad Yartey, Head of Public Relations Unit, and distributed to the GNA Tema Office, outlined the committee's mandate. It is tasked with identifying systemic and operational issues needing reform, investigating regulatory violations, evaluating the management of collected fines, and offering recommendations to improve the programme.

The statement emphasized the ministry's initiative to reform the Axle Load Control Programme due to its current operational difficulties. The ministry is committed to enhancing road safety and addressing overloading to ensure that road pavements achieve their intended lifespan.
