Sunyani: A Circuit Court in Sunyani has sentenced 69-year-old druggist Nana Agyemang Badu to 17 years in prison for the sale of expired drugs, in violation of the Public Health Act, 2012 (Act 851). The judgment was delivered by Mr. Sylvester Nii Okai Ablorh, who also levied a penalty of GHC120,000 on Badu, the operator of an over-the-counter drug store located in Chiraa, within the Sunyani West Municipality.

According to Ghana News Agency, the court stipulated that failing to pay the fine would result in an additional two-year prison term for the convict. The case first emerged in 2022 when the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) conducted an inspection in Chiraa and found quantities of expired drugs in Badu's store. This discovery prompted an investigation by the Bono Regional Criminal Investigations Department (CID), leading to Badu's arrest and subsequent arraignment.

Throughout the legal proceedings, Badu maintained his innocence, resulting in several adjournments. However, after thorough examination, the court found him guilty and sentenced him to 17 years in prison, with the prescribed fine.
