Tema: The Tema Traditional Council (TTC) will impose a curfew on Tema Newtown from 23:00 to 02:00 hours on Wednesday, February 12, to facilitate a purification rite. The decision aims to ensure that the sacred rituals are conducted without disturbances.
According to Ghana News Agency, the imposition of the curfew was communicated through a letter signed by Mr. Jefferey Lomo, the Registrar of TTC. The letter was distributed to inform relevant stakeholders about the upcoming restrictions. It stated that during the curfew, traditional pacification rites would be carried out, with only traditional priests permitted to be outdoors.
The purification process is intended to cleanse the land from curses pronounced by aggrieved residents during the 2024 Kplejoo festival. The festival witnessed the tragic deaths of two men, necessitating the rites to appease their spirits ahead of this year's festivities.
The unfortunate incident occurred on Friday, April 12, 2024, when a confrontation between the festival's youth procession and Ghana Navy personnel resulted in two fatalities and injuries to three others. In response, the Council, led by Nyaado Nii Dade Abo Hamler, the second Aboitse We Wolomo, conducted rites to seek intervention from their gods and ancestors to address the violence.
