Tunis: The share of tourism in the gross domestic product (GDP) upped from 4.1% in 2018 to 4.5% in 2019n dropping to 3.2% in 2022, according to the Tourism Satellite Account 2018-2022 released on Wednesday by the National Institute of Statistics (INS). The INS explained that after a rather buoyant 2019, the tourism industries were hit hard by the health crisis in 2020 (Covid-19 pandemic) and its numerous repercussions, following the unprecedented contraction in tourism demand. The share of tourism in GDP stood at just 1.7% in 2020 and 2% in 2021. The direct GDP generated by the tourism sector rose from TND 4.6 billion in 2018 to TND 5.5 billion in 2019, then fell to TND 2 billion in 2020 and TND 2.5 billion in 2021, before recovering to TND 4.4 billion in 2022. The Gross Direct Added Value of tourism comes essentially (67.5%) from tourism-related activities, namely accommodation, catering and transport services, and tourism-related activities (23%). The INS further indicated that the number of direct job s in the tourism sector increased from 137,000 in 2018, to 155,000 in 2019, to just over 70,000 in 2020 and 2022, reaching 107,000 in 2022, accounting for 3.1% of all jobs in Tunisia.
