Ashaiman: A 40-year-old trader has been sentenced to 10 years imprisonment after being found guilty of manslaughter for causing the death of a public servant by hitting him with an empty crate.
According to Ghana News Agency, the trader, Veronica Djoazaa, was convicted by a seven-member jury at the end of her trial. Djoazaa, a bar operator, was found to have thrown an empty crate at Anthony Apurum, a public servant, during a confrontation, leading to his death.
The incident took place at Zenu in Ashaiman on October 2, 2021. Djoazaa was sentenced by Justice Marie-Louise Simmons after being held on the charge of manslaughter. The prosecution revealed that the victim, Apurum, was a 48-year-old public servant residing in Zenu, Ashaiman.
On the evening of October 2, 2021, Apurum visited a drinking spot operated by Djoazaa. A dispute arose between the two, during which Djoazaa threw an empty Coca Cola crate at Apurum, causing severe head injuries. Apurum reported the incident to the police and received medical treatment, but his condition worsened over the following days.
Apurum was admitted to the Tema General Hospital on October 8, 2021, where he passed away. A postmortem conducted on December 12, 2021, by Dr. Eric Dumfeh at the Tema General Hospital determined the cause of death to be blunt head trauma, classifying it as 'unnatural.'
Following these findings, Djoazaa was arrested and the crate involved in the incident was retrieved during the investigation.
