Bawku: The Upper East Regional branch of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) has called upon the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) to provide enhanced security measures for workers in the Bawku Municipality and surrounding areas. The TUC highlighted the unique security challenges in the region, which have led to many workers leaving the area, and stressed the need for special protection to ensure that those remaining can work without fear.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Moses Awenkanaab Awarikaro, the Regional Chairperson of the TUC, made this appeal during the May Day Celebration in Bolgatanga. He emphasized the importance of safeguarding health professionals, teachers, and bankers, among other workers, so they can continue to serve the community. Mr. Awarikaro urged for special security provisions for those working in schools, hospitals, clinics, and banks to enable them to perform their duties effectively.
The celebration, themed 'Resetting pay and working conditions in Ghana: The role of stakeholders,' gathered various professionals and workers unions to mark the annual May 1 event. Participating unions included the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Public Sector Workers Union (PSWU), Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), and Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU).
Before the parade, union members, dressed in branded T-shirts, marched through Bolgatanga's streets with placards demanding better conditions, such as 'Healthcare heroes deserve better' and 'Mr President, implement our conditions of service now.' Other placards highlighted issues like unpaid tool allowances, the need for an airport in the Upper East Region, and calls for better working conditions.
Mr. Awarikaro, who chaired the parade, encouraged workers in Bawku to collaborate with local security agencies to ensure a safe working environment. He also acknowledged government efforts to address delayed teacher promotions and urged further government action on various labor requests.
Madam Scholastica Tagtir Dery, the Regional Secretary of the TUC, praised the workers' dedication despite challenging work conditions and urged them to continue their efforts as leadership advocates for their interests.
In response, Regional Minister Mr. Donatus Akamugri Atanga, who also chairs REGSEC, assured that measures are in place to protect workers in Bawku. He emphasized the importance of workers remaining in the area to secure the future of the youth and pledged to address workers' concerns, including poor work conditions, irregular pensions, and high utility costs.
