Accra: The Industrial and Commercial Workers' Union (ICU) - Ghana has called for a comprehensive stakeholder dialogue to address the increasing cost of living affecting workers and citizens across the country. The union emphasized the need for effective policies aimed at providing economic relief to alleviate the financial burdens faced by Ghanaians.

According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Morgan Ayawine, General Secretary of ICU-Ghana, highlighted the pressing challenges in his May Day message. He pointed out that escalating utility bills, high rent, unaffordable food prices, increased transport costs, and rising medical expenses have significantly strained the financial stability of salaried workers, necessitating immediate intervention.

Mr. Ayawine urged workers to persist in their efforts to support institutions while focusing on strengthening the economy to facilitate national development. He noted the recent renaming of the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations to the Ministry of Labour, Jobs and Employment as a positive step. This change, he stated, underscores the importance of prioritizing job creation in economic policies to address the urgent employment needs of the youth.

The General Secretary also emphasized the responsibility of employers to adhere to the rules outlined in the Collective Agreement and the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651), ensuring fair treatment of workers. He stressed the importance of industrial democracy in fostering peace, harmony, productivity, and mutual benefits within worker-management relationships.

Reflecting on the significance of May Day, Mr. Ayawine reminded stakeholders of the sacrifices made by past generations to secure industrial democracy. He encouraged continued advocacy for workers' rights and the nurturing of productive relationships with employers and other stakeholders.

Finally, Mr. Ayawine acknowledged the resilience of Ghanaian workers who have persevered through economic hardships in recent years, commending their steadfastness and dedication.
