Accra: An Accra High Court has remanded Mr. Kwabena Adu-Boahene, former Director-General of the National Signals Bureau, into the custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO). This measure aims to allow the Attorney-General to finalize investigations and file witness statements.

According to Ghana News Agency, the accused, along with his wife and other individuals, face 11 charges, including stealing, money laundering of GHS49.1 million in state funds, willfully causing financial loss to the State, conspiracy, collaboration to commit a crime, and abuse of public office. They have pleaded not guilty to these charges.

The court, led by Judge John Eugene Nyadu Nyante, made the decision following an in-camera hearing regarding Adu-Boahene's bail status. At a previous hearing, Mr. Samuel Atta Akyea, counsel for the accused, argued to maintain existing bail conditions, while the Attorney-General, Dr. Dominic Ayine, contested this, citing allegations that Adu-Boahene had interfered with potential witnesses.

Judge Nyante acknowledged that the Attorney-General's submission justified an in-camera hearing to deliberate on the bail matter. After evaluating the arguments, he concluded that Adu-Boahene's liberty needs to be balanced against the State's interest in gathering witness statements. 'It is for this reason that I order Mr. Adu-Boahene to be kept in EOCO custody for seven working days,' the judge stated.

Additional accused parties include Mildred Donkor, a former banker, and Advantage Solutions Limited. The proceedings have been postponed to May 13 for further directions.
